Musings from eDiscovery Industry Leaders for Valentine's Day

Written by Amy McWilliams | Feb 10, 2026 2:26:10 PM

eDiscovery isn’t always easy to love. At face value, it's complex, deadline-driven, and can be messy. But it’s also an industry built on smart people solving problems together.

So in honor of Valentine's Day, I asked a group of respected industry friends and leaders (perhaps to their chagrin) to answer the question: What do you *love* about eDiscovery? They could also answer: Why do you stay *committed* to eDiscovery? Or when did you realize you had a *crush* on eDiscovery? They… loved it.

Mary Mack
CEO & Chief Legal Technologist, EDRM

“There is never a dull moment, and ‘eDiscovery’ will not be solved in 5 years. Our wonderful, global, multidisciplinary community leaders step up to assist each other over and over again… We are an oasis of collaboration in an adversarial system!”

In a field born out of litigation, eDiscovery’s culture of cooperation is one of its most defining — and admirable — traits.

Maribel Rivera
Industry Leader and Vice President, ACEDS

My commitment to eDiscovery comes from the heart of the work… It demands precision, curiosity, and integrity, but it also requires empathy and perspective… eDiscovery isn’t just a discipline. It’s a responsibility.

David Greetham
Computer Forensics Executive and eDiscovery Veteran

I love the smart people and being in the trenches with them. It creates lifelong friendships.

Jared Coseglia
Founder and CEO, TruLegal

My first crush in the eDiscovery industry is a group of four people I placed when I first opened Tru: Wendy King, Sean Reddick, James Bekier, and Nicole Tineo… I crush on them as much now as I did then. Watching their careers blossom over sixteen years holds a special place in my heart.

Doug Austin
eDiscovery Thought Leader and Editor, eDiscovery Today

I love eDiscovery because it turns chaos into context and unorganized data into a narrative that actually makes sense. It’s where law meets logic, storytelling meets electronic evidence, and it all leads to uncovering the truth. As a “true crime” buff, I also love that eDiscovery and digital forensics play a vital role uncovering the truth in true crime investigations today. While lawyers may be “from Mars” and technologists may be“from Venus”, I love the fact that eDiscovery brings them together to achieve a common goal – a unique combination of legal and technical concepts that means there is never a dull moment if you’re an eDiscovery professional!

Zef Deda
Technology Partner and Chief Revenue Officer, Venio Systems

What I love most about eDiscovery is the relationships I’ve built along the way — along with the uniquely structured chaos that defines our work… Every day brings a new puzzle, rarely the same twice.”

If you’re drawn to problem-solving, variability, and fast-moving challenges, eDiscovery has a way of pulling you in — and keeping you engaged.

Matt Berry
Co-founder & CEO of QuikData

What I love about eDiscovery is the creativity it makes possible. Every matter presents a new problem which could be an inefficient process, a data challenge, or something a client knows can be done better. There’s nothing like huddling together, putting our heads down, building a new feature or workflow within our solution, and then watching it transform the way our clients work. Seeing our technology turn complex tasks into something simple… that’s eDiscovery love.

Ray Biederman
Co-Founder & CEO, Proteus Discovery Group

I fell in love with eDiscovery at first sight… There is newness to it every day, it intersects with some of the most interesting legal topics, and there are lots of interesting people to interact with. 22 years and counting…

Why This Matters

This industry thrives because of people who care deeply about collaboration, integrity, and collaboration. People who show up during fire drills. People who share knowledge. People who stay.

So, Happy Valentine’s Day to the eDiscovery community, and thank you for being the reason this work continues to matter.
