Understanding eDiscovery Line Items

eDiscovery costs represent a substantial portion of litigation and investigation case budgets, often compounded by the unpredictable nature of data volumes and the varying pricing models offered by software and service providers. We recognize the need for clarity in this complex landscape, which is why we recently created an infographic aimed at breaking down the myriad costs associated with eDiscovery

The infographic outlines key line items closely aligned with the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM), highlighting the major costs that begin at the Data Collection stage. From there, expenses typically escalate through eDiscovery Hosting and in Document Review. While the document does not claim to cover every potential cost, it serves to provide clients with a more nuanced understanding of the financial decision-making involved at each stage of the eDiscovery process. Importantly, it illustrates how costs can spiral out of control without a well-defined eDiscovery strategy, especially when preparing for impending litigation.

Let's face it, eDiscovery is complex, but pricing shouldn't be. We want to prepare clients by helping them understand the costs associated with eDiscovery and provide some clarity so they can assess their eDiscovery program. And if they choose to work with a vendor, they should consider one that has a transparent pricing model (like Proteus!) and is able to simply explain the cost model and scalability options.
